Wooden shoes in a nutshell: Since the early Middle Ages we, the Dutch, have been wearing wooden shoes. No wonder that even now it's daily footwear for farmers, gardeners and many people in their freetime.

Who is wearing wooden shoes? Why are we wearing wooden shoes? How are wooden shoes made? The decoration Who is wearing wooden shoes? Everybody over the whole world thinks that everyone in Holland wears wooden shoes. But that's not right! Only a big minority in Holland wear wooden shoes and almost all people who are wearing wooden shoes are farmers, gardeners or people in nursing. Also many people are wearing wooden shoes in their free time. That means that most people wear wooden shoes for their jobs. Why are we wearing wooden shoes? Farmers, market-gardeners and so on are most of the time wearing wooden shoes. That is because it's very handy to wear them when you walk on dirty ground. It's also to protect yourself. There are some big advantages when you wear wooden shoes instead of boots or normal shoes! If you are a gardener or farmer and you have some dangerous, sharp objects on your yard wooden shoes will protect you! Are you working with cows or horses, it would be everything but nice to have the weight of a cow or horse on your foot, wooden shoes protect you! There are also a lot of people who wear wooden shoes because you can get in and out of them easily without wasting a lot of time. And mostly you won't sweat in wooden shoes, because fresh air can reach your feet and if you wear boots it's impossible for the fresh air to reach your feet. How are wooden shoes made? Wooden shoes are made by hand, or by machines. Making wooden shoes by hand has almost completly disappeared. Only at some places in Holland you can watch people who make wooden shoes just as in the past, like the old artisans. Making wooden shoes of a piece of wood needs to have professional knowledge. The craftsman gets this professional knowledge out of experience. For example the left shoe has to be exactly the same as the right one. Of course, you also need good instruments. The craftsman maintains his tools realy well, and his knifes and hatchets become even sharper while he is working. The decoration The finishing touch of making a wooden shoe is, of course, the decoration. The decoration is a painting and all craftsmen have their own shape. All our wooden shoes are hand painted! Sometimes there is some carved work on wooden shoes. This kind of art has not disappeared yet. People who do this kind of work don't do it for a living, but because they like to do it, it's their hobby. The work of the loving amateur leads to an other "hobby", the "klompendanskunst" (a dance on wooden shoes), and to the wearing of costumes. It's true that people in some places in Holland still wear their costume and their belonging wooden shoes daily. |
